CHANDIGARH, September 27 – The annual 10-day Navratri Dandia Festival- 2017 underway at Kalagram (Manimajra) here, witnessed a huge footfalls on the 7th day today. The festival has been jointly organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India and SBM Pictures, Delhi. Incurable Dandia lovers from the tricity turned in their thousands to be a part of the annual festivity. The continued soaring day temperatures failed to play a spoilsport as they took to the dance floor and performed Dandia for hours.
Dandia lovers, young and old and even tots, could seen performing Dandia under the guidance of a professional Dandia troupe, specially invited from Ahmedabad (Gujarat). The troupe is led by Jhalak Patel, a professional Dandia performer of repute. They performed amid the haunting folk tunes reverberated, forcing others to join in dancing fete and shake a leg. The way they performed Dandia with the professionals’ solicitude under the guidance of the troupe proved to be the real show-stopper.
Food stalls serving a range of delectable treats from various regions of the country attracted foodies in great number. Food lovers had a date with their choicest culinary treats, who savored them to their heart’s fill. The savories included the South Indian cuisines, Amritsari kulcha, lachha pratha, naan, Mumbai’s pau-bhaji, Domino’s pizza, Chaat-papdi. For the sweet tooth there was a range of goodies to choose from, including ice cream, special kulfi, hot jalebi and gulab jamun and much more. Crafts and crockery stalls did a booming business as they had a host of attractive items for buyers to choose from. Rugs and mattresses stalls selling designers items did brisk business on the 7th day of the festivity.
“The yearly dancing fete offers a welcome breather for city Dandia lovers from the routine rumble tumble and be a part of the festivity. The occasion not only offers an entertainment for dance lovers but also offers an opportunity to artistes of various states to showcase and exchange their talent. Given the huge footfall this year, the organizers have put in place the whole gamut of security arrangements. Parking arrangements are in place here, like never before. We enjoyed Dandia this time around to the fullest and satiated our taste buds.” said Shakti Sehgal and Gauri Sehgal, from Chandigarh, who have been regular visitors to the Dandia Festival since its inception in 2002.
Programme Officer of NZCC Yashwinder Sharma ‘Jassi’ said “The annual Navratri Dandia Festival -17, which started on September 21, will continue till September 30 (Between 5.30 pm and 10 pm). Special gift hampers are also given to the best dancing couple of the day, daily.
