This award winning play, by one of India’s best known playwrights Vijay Tendulkar, is the story of a daughter’s transformation into a wife and a mother, charged with significant social and moral questions,which are thought –provoking , and to which there are no easy answers. A young woman from a politically active family that regards itself as progressive and liberal decides to marry a socially inferior, but talented man. The play explores the texture of modernity and social change in India through the forces this marriage unleashes. This gripping play, which is also laced with a wry humour, is charged with an undercurrent of violence, uncertainties and anger, and concerns itself with questions that are crucial to all societies grappling with change and social barriers.


Kanyadaan told a tale that was both universal and contemporary. Moreover, it had never been performed in English, so there was a large section of people, who had never seen it. The Dalit aspects of the play have a sociological and political dimension. On one level it is clash of culture between people who inhabit the same Geographical space but entirely different worlds. AND in the political contexts, the sad truth is, that this problem is hardly dated! She has been Artistic Director of her own Theatre Company,-The Primetime Theatre Company, for nearly 27 years and her theatrical work has travelled all over India and the globe to over 75 cities, to much critical acclaim.

She has pioneered the staging of original Indian writing in English, showcasing work by some of India’s most outstanding Playwrights, like Mahesh Dattani, Vijay Tendulkar, Mahesh Elkunchwar, Partap Sharma, Girish Karnad etc.

Ms Dubey has performed in more than a dozen TV shows, and over 55 films and has won several Best Actress awards for her plays and films in National & International Festivals.

She is on the Expert Committee for theatre for the Culture Ministry, curates the theatre section of the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, and is a trustee of Ms Protima Bedi’ s dance village Nrityagram, outside Bangalore.

The Playwright

Vijay Tendulkar is regarded as one of India’s best-known playwrights, and has been celebrated as the ‘Playwright of the Millennium’. His plays, which have been perceived by critics as being ahead of their times, are also timeless, because of his accurate and sensitive portrayal of the social issues of the time. Tendulkar has more than 50 publications to his credit, including the plays Silence! The Court is in Session and Kanyadaan,translated from Marathi. Tendulkar has been widely translated and performed in many Indian languages. He has received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya Award, the Maharashtra State Award (nine times), the Saraswati Samman, as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay (Aakrosh, 1980). He was conferred the Padma Bhushan and the prestigious Vishnudas Bhave Memorial Award.


The prime time theatre Company was set up in 1991with the ultimate objectives of providing a platform for original Indian writing in English. All its recent productions have been in keeping with this philosophy .Some of the more notable production ofthe group, include Dance Like A Man (1995), Autobiography (1996), Jaya- The Victory ! (An Operatic montage of the Mahabharata, 1998), On a Muggy Night in Mumbai(1999). Siren SAMMY(2005). Three of these have won the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award for the best play of the year, and SAMMY won for National Award at META in 2006. The company has participated in several National and International Festivals, and toured extensively in India and abroad, with most of its shows.
